METRO (Maastirhct University. NL) and CECCA Joint Seminar:
“The Salvage of the Vessel ‘Ever Given’ in the Suez Canal: What Happens After ‘Captain Netherlands’ Saves World Trade?”
About The Joint Seminar
The 400m-long Mega vessel MV Ever Given, built in 2018 and one of the biggest Ultra-Large Container Vessels (ULCVs), was successfully refloated by the appointed professional salvor, the Dutch Company SMIT Salvage, on 29 March 2021. Maritime transport which carries more than 80% of global merchandise has long been full of risks, which could be caused by extreme weather events, navigation mistakes, etc. Moreover, maritime casualties put a lot of danger to crew members’ life, the vessel and property onboard. Since the emergence of oil tankers in the 1960s, damage to the environment resulting from maritime casualties has been a serious concern. Professional salvors who have the capacity to respond to an emergency at sea in a timely and efficient manner are essential to the safety of navigation and the protection of the Environment, which are arguably the ultimate goals of modern maritime law of salvage. Using the Ever Given accident as a case study, this joint seminar organized by METRO (Maastricht University) and CECCA aims to discuss some inevitable legal issues following the casualty.
